Sophiahemmet University College is the leading university college in Nursing educations in Sweden. According to a recent national quality review performed by the Swedish Agency for Higher Education the Nursing Programme of the university college is in the front-line and the number of applicants to this programme is among the highest in Sweden. Sophiahemmet University College also presents a variety of additional educational programmes in the field of Nursing, such as Specialist Nursing programmes, Master programmes and Diploma programmes. Our mission is to contribute to human health nationally and internationally by supplying novel evidence-based knowledge leading to high quality medical care.
General information
Sophiahemmet University College originates from the nursing study programme that was started in 1884 by the Swedish Queen Sophia. She aimed to improve the quality of Swedish health care by introducing a programme that contained both theoretical teaching and clinical training. This concept was new in Sweden at the time and was inspired by the ideas behind the training school of nursing that Florence Nightingale had established at St Thomas' Hospital in London.
Sophiahemmet University College is fully owned by Sophiahemmet Association, a non-profit organization, which also provides health services through Sophiahemmet Incorporation, a healthcare corporation. The hospital is known as a high-quality private hospital, offering a wide range of specialized inpatient and outpatient services.
Central location
The University College is located in the very heart of Stockholm in the beautiful Sophiahemmet park. In the close neighbourhood several other university colleges, e.g. the Royal Institute of Technology in Stockholm, The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences and the Royal University College of Music, are situated.
Education
Sophiahemmet University College is a modern university college providing high quality education. Approximately 350 students attend the three-year nursing study programme, which leads to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing. The degree gives the right to apply for authorisation by the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare as a Registered Nurse. The university college also offers specialist nursing programmes in Elderly Care and Prehospital Emergency Care. In addition, a study programme leading to a Master of Science (One Year) in Nursing is offered.
Educational programmes and courses
– Contract Education
Sophiahemmet University College offers contract education including a supplementary programme in nursing science for registered nurses leading to a Degree of Bachelor with a major in Nursing, a specialist diploma programme for assisting nurses in dementia care and a variety of single subject courses within the area of health care and nursing.
Sophiahemmet University College has several well-developed virtual arenas for Internet-based distance learning. For international courses and educational programmes Sophia International Nurse Online (SINO) has been developed. This modern, English spoken virtual arena is specifically designed for flexible e-learning with virtual class rooms, communication and learning facilities as well as library facilities. Information, communication and learning are easy to handle between students and teachers and around 1.500 students yearly are participating in distance studies in Sophiahemmet University College.
Study exchange programmes
Sophiahemmet University College participates in several student exchange programmes. During the nursing study programme, students are offered the possibility to locate a shorter or longer study period in the nordic countries, Europe or foreign countries, such as Tanzania, China or Australia.
Research
At Sophiahemmet University College science is well integrated in all study programmes and courses. Graduated teachers and postgraduate students are engaged in scientific projects mainly covering different fields of health care and nursing. In addition, research is also carried out within the areas of medical science and psychology. The projects are frequently carried out in collaboration with scientists from other university colleges or universities in Sweden or abroad.
Library
The library provides approximately 18.000 book volumes in Swedish or English and a large number of international journals with emphasis on nursing science and research methodology. In addition, access to various databases and interlibrary loan service, as well as quiet study areas is provided. The library also provides curriculum-based courses in information retrieval for students via the Internet.
Students’ Union
The students’ union is actively involved in educational and student issues and is represented in the University College Board as well as in planning and preparatory committees. In addition, the students’ union arranges various social activities.
